LENT LUNCHES

Lent lunches continue through March and are on Fridays (1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd) from 12 noon in the Oxnam Room. There is soup, roll and butter and a pudding, all for only £3.50, and we have a takeaway service as well. The lunches are all provided by volunteers drawn from the Anglican and Methodist churches.

EASTER

The Christian faith stands, or falls, on the resurrection –either we have a Living Lord who has mastery over sin and over death or we had best shut up shop without more ado. Whatever may be our personal reaction to Matthew’s account of the earthquake, the angel and the empty tomb, (Matthew 28:1-10), the inescapable evidence of the resurrection is the new life that came to broken and dispirited disciples; the renewal that has come has come again and again when the church has looked moribund and finished; we worship a Lord who meets us in the daily business of living, to renew our life and who will bring yet another resurrection in his church when we are really ready to let Him have his way with us.

You are warmly invited to join our journey to Easter

Our Lent course ‘Glimpses of God’ continues each Wednesday evening at 7.00pm

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS

We are pleased to announce that we have been able to send a donation of £212 to the Precious Lives appeal which was collected at the Christmas lights service, the carol service and the special tree in church.  Also we have sent a donation of £158 to the Church of England Children’s Society from the collection at the crib service. At the request of the PCC it will be used by this National organisation to fund work for children in Cornwall, in which we can be involved. To find out more, the link is http://www.childrenssociety.org.uk/what-you-can-do/your-church/good-childhood-conversations

FOODBANK

Thanks to the generosity of people in the village, we have been able to give the FoodBank a further 36kg of food, which is an amazing total. During Lent there will be a FoodBank collection box in the church  so we can continue to support this charity. We would like to thank Dave and Corinne for kindly keeping our collection box in the Londis shop during December and also thanks to the school for continuing to collect food.

JANUARY’S CURRY AND QUIZ NIGHT

This event raised £200 for the church and was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Special thanks go to the quizmaster, Steve, for  his entertaining and challenging questions and to Tim and his team at the Pheasant Inn for their hospitality.

CHURCH FLOODLIGHTING

During January and February the church has been floodlit in memory of Bill Grose,  in memory of absent friends and in appreciation of John and Janette Steer and the village lights committee who make our village look so lovely over Christmas. If you would like the church to be floodlit to commemorate an event that is special to you, you can find the envelopes to do this at the back of the church (near the entrance). It costs only £10 for one week and you will know that the lighting up is especially for you. During Lent the tower will not be floodlit.

LENT LUNCHES

Watch out for posters advertising the popular Friday Lent lunches, which will start on Friday, 15 February from 12 noon in the Oxnam Room. NEWS

THANKS
Thank you to everyone who supported the curry and quiz night
held in February in the Pheasant Inn. 15
teams took part and over £230 was raised for church funds. Special thanks go to
Jason for his hospitality and to Steve for being the quiz master.

LENT LUNCHES
Lent lunches will take place on Fridays in the Oxnam Room
starting on Friday, 24 February from 12 noon-1.00pm. The dates are: 24 February, 2 March, 9 March,
16 March, 23 March and 30 March. Lunch
costs just £3.00 for soup with a bread roll followed by a pudding, together
with tea or coffee. As a new idea this year we are also offering a small
takeaway service if you would like a second helping of something to take home
with you for a donation of at least 50p. The box for the Food Bank will also be
in the Oxnam Room on Fridays in Lent for donations of groceries to give to
those in poverty in the local community who cannot feed themselves or their
families.

LENT COURSE
Our Lent course this year will be on Wednesday evenings at
7.00pm in the Methodist Church. It is a ‘York Course’ called ‘Handing on the Torch’
and will focus on discipleship in our modern world. This is an ecumenical
course and all are very welcome.

PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS
It is marvellous to know that the church will soon have
photovoltaic cells to generate electricity. Our church has two pitched roofs so
the cells can be installed between the two where they cannot be seen. Our
beautiful mediaeval church will soon have its own ‘invisible’ 21st
century technology in place.

MESSY CHURCH
The next Messy Church is on Sunday, 26 February at 2.45pm in the Methodist Church so please watch out for posters and booking forms in the village . Messy Church is something completely different with fun (and messy!) activities for all ages. We have one each term so please fell welcome to come and try Messy Church out. The activities are followed by tea and it is all free, although we welcome a donation to help cover the costs. This is a joint churches in St Newlyn East enterprise.

29th February-Wednesdays- Lent Group begins 7.00pm in St. Newlyn East Methodist Chapel

LUNCHES IN LENT
We hope to have regular lunches available on Fridays in Lent, just as we have done in the past, but have not yet finalised the helpers to cover every week so please watch out in the village for posters to advertise these. The first one will be on Friday, 24 February and we will have a Foodbank box available then as well. This is also a joint churches in St Newlyn East enterprise.

24th At St. Enoder Church –Confirmation Service by the Bishop of Truro Rt. Reverend Tim Thornton.

THANKS
Following the Christmas tree festival and collections at special services over the Christmas period we have been able to send a donation of over £300 to the Precious Lives Appeal.

FOODBANK
Thanks to everyone in our wonderful community, the Foodbank box in December was very well supported. We know that many people would like to continue to give on an occasional basis as there is still a pressing need to support the poorest people in our area so we will continue to have a box available for donations in the church on Sundays or you can give a donation to any member of our church community. We hope that we will also be able to have a box at any of our special events in future.

WEDDING DRESS DISPLAY
On 28 April, when we celebrate the feast of St Newlina in the village with lots of great activities, we would like to have a wedding dress display in the church. This depends on having some gowns to borrow! If you would be willing to put your dress on display in the church for that weekend, please contact Linda Angove (510778) and we will see if there is enough support to make this venture possible.

LIGHT UP THE TOWER
Several people have asked for the tower to be lit too commemorate something special in their lives. If you would like to do this, there are envelopes for your donation in the church on the top of the bookcase near the pillar at the back. Just fill in the details, add £10 and put the money in the donations box and we will do the rest for you. A sign in the church porch tells everyone what the special occasion is and you will know that the tower is lit just for you.

AND DON’T FORGET…We always have secondhand books in the church (at the back). The donation is only 20p and the stock is always changing so please look in to get a new collection to read and perhaps donate any books you have read and don’t want to keep.
